Civic Reception Celebrates Lord Mayor of Chester and Outstanding Community Leaders

A distinguished civic reception was held on Monday, 4 May 2026, at Lache Community Centre, Chester, to honour the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sherin Akhtar, together with a number of respected community leaders and public figures recognised for their exceptional dedication and contributions to society.

The prestigious event was organised by Monchab Ali, Founding Chairman of the Chester North Wales Bangladesh Youth Association, and brought together civic dignitaries, elected representatives, community leaders, and local residents in a celebration of leadership, public service, and community achievement.

Councillor Sherin Akhtar was honoured for her unwavering commitment to public service, inclusive leadership, and her efforts to strengthen and unite communities across Chester. In her remarks, she expressed sincere gratitude and highlighted the collective support that has shaped her journey in public life.

“This recognition is not solely mine—it belongs to the many individuals, communities, and colleagues who have encouraged and supported me throughout the years,” she said. “Public service is fundamentally about people—listening to their voices, understanding their needs, and working together to create stronger, more inclusive communities for all.”

She also paid tribute to the Chester North Wales Bangladesh Youth Association and its Founding Chairman, Monchab Ali, acknowledging their continued dedication to promoting community cohesion, inclusion, and positive social engagement.

The evening further celebrated several distinguished individuals whose contributions have had a significant impact on civic and community life. Those recognised included Muzahid Khan MBE DL, Ali Akbor OBE DL, Councillor Abdul Jabbar, Councillor Mo Hussain, Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Shibley Alam, former Mayor of Tameside, Anwar Ali OBE, Sufu Miah BEM, and Mohammed Mizanur Rahman (Mizan).

Each honouree has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment within their respective fields, ranging from local government and public service to social enterprise and grassroots community development. Their collective efforts continue to make a meaningful difference both within their local communities and across the wider United Kingdom.
